Volunteers needed for Umpires Committee

The Otago Hockeys Umpire Committee are currently recruiting for a number of crucial volunteer roles. Umpiring is not only a crucial and rewarding part of our game but it is also a pathway of it's own.

All of those appointed to the rewarding roles below will work closely with and be supported by OHA staff.

Secretary/Treasurer:

Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Prepare the agenda for meetings in consultation with the Chairperson.
  • Make arrangements including venue, date, times and hospitality for committee meetings.
  • Call for and receive nominations for committee and other positions for the group AGM.
  • Take the minutes of meetings and writing the minutes up as soon as possible after the meeting.
  • Read, reply and file correspondence promptly.
  • Responsible for the allocation and record of umpire shirts.
  • Keep year plan/calendar up to date.
  • Maintain registers of members’ names, addresses and sponsors. 
  • Prepare a budget and monitor it carefully.
  • Keep a proper record of all payments and monies received.
  • Make sure financial reports are available and understood at all committee meetings.
  • Arrange and ensure that information for an audit is prepared each year.
  • Produce an annual financial report.
  • Pay the bills.
  • Ensure members are reimbursed (i.e. umpiring games)
  • Work with Otago Hockey to seek funding for umpires. 

Knowledge and skills required:

  • Effective communication.
  • Positive and enthusiastic.
  • Well organised. 
  • Able to allocate regular time periods to maintain the books. 
  • Able to keep good records. 
  • Can delegate tasks.
  • Can maintain confidentiality on relevant matters.
  • Has a good working knowledge of the association/rules/policies. 

Club Appointments Sheriff:

Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Oversee the implementation of appointments by the appointments panel for the club competition.
  • Build a good rapport/culture with umpires, players and all involved.
  • Works with Development and Mentoring committee members.
  • Responsible to select and manage, without prejudice, the appointment of umpires for all matches played under the jurisdiction of OHA.
  • Will ensure that all umpires are informed for any umpiring duties no less than 7 days prior to the match taking place.
  • Deals with any issues from teams or umpires regarding appointments.
  • Sets up clear panels for who can be appointed to each grade.
  • Ensures umpires are appointed to appropriate games.
  • Helps to oversee finals appointments.

Knowledge and Skills required:

  • Effective communication.
  • Positive and enthusiastic.
  • Well organised. 

School Appointments Sheriff:

  • Works with Development and Mentoring committee members.

  • Use media to help develop umpires thinking.

  • Run and organise development evenings (monthly for each group)

Junior Development Officer:

  • Facilitates the mentoring process (log books, umpire coaching etc)
  • Monitors how mentoring is done and provides feedback to mentors.
  • Organises umpire coaches/mentors for senior hockey.

Knowledge and Skills required:

  • Effective communication.
  • Positive and enthusiastic.
  • Well organised.
  • Has a good working knowledge of the Rules of Hockey.
