Coach Hockey

If you are interested in coaching at primary, intermediate, secondary or club level please email the OHA Community Hockey Manager on coach@oha.org.nz to express your interest. There are always schools and clubs looking for volunteer coaches at all levels so no matter what your level of experience, we would love to hear from you.    

Hockey New Zealand Coaching Courses

The first point of entry for all of our coaches is the "Coaching Ticket".  This is a great 'introduction' to any of our Coaching Programmes and we highly recommend that you jump online and get this done first.  There are also a variety of other small and short lessons that you can take part in online.  Click here to register:- Hockey New Zealand Online Learning Page

There are also National Coaching Courses available for our coaches.

Coaching Foundation Players is for Coaches who are actively coaching youth and adult aged players through school, club, or association programmes. This is typically with teams outside of premier club and school grades. It is free to register and coaches gain access to online resources and lessons, as well as a range of workshop opportunities.

Coaching Competitive Players is for Coaches who are actively coaching youth and adult aged players and have been for 3 or more years. They are typically coaching school premier or reserve grades, or age group association teams. It is free to register and coaches will gain access to online resources and lessons, as well as a range of workshop opportunities.

Otago Hockey will run Face 2 Face Workshops for our Primary and Intermediate School Coaches.  If you are interested in taking part in any of these courses, please do not hesitate to register your interest with Jolene.  Email Contact - click here

 

Coaches Mentor Programme

A coaches mentoring structure that is helping upskill a large number of coaches in the Otago region has been developed. If you would like to be involved in this programme as either a mentor or a mentee, please contact Jolene on her email address coach@oha.org.nz today! This programme has limited spaces and must be applied for.

Coaching Workshops

 

Introduction to 6-a-side Coach Workshop

Aimed at coaches/managers/parents for teams in Ministicks and Kiwisticks (Years 3-6), our introduction to 6-a-side workshop will focus on getting the most out of the limited time you'll have together as a team. We'll look at how to coach basic skills, how to improve them, and how to encourage team play! As always, if you've got questions bring them along and we'll be able to structure sessions around your needs as well!

There will be two initial workshops in Term 2, 2025:


Intermediate 6-a-side Coaching Workshop

Aimed at coaches for teams in Kwiksticks (Year 7&8), this workshop will focus on building key aspects of the game now that we've transitioned from a quarter-turf to a half-turf. This will include: Basic team structures, positioning, creating meaningful trainings, and team-building.

There will be one initial workshop in Term 2, 2025

 If you can't make a session, a combined year 3-8 catch up will be held later in the term. If you would like to attend this session please let Jolene know by emailing coach@oha.org.nz.
